Most of us from time to time have cravings, some of us more than others. Usually, most of these appear in the form of sugar cravings. Usually, people who start a ketogenic lifestyle have this problem. This is because most of them have spent their lives eating sugar, processed carbs and such. However, different people have different cravings. Some people crave salty foods, chips, popcorn, crackers etc. Others want pizza, french fries, or mac and cheese.  Perhaps you have always wondered WHY?

Why Do We Get Cravings?

In order to beat the cravings, you need to know why are they happening to you. One thing you need to know about them is most of the time they are not real. They just happen due to boredom or habit. Thus, you reinforce your boredom by feeding it with food and this becomes a habit. Therefore, when you give up these foods, the brain is not trained with the reality that you have done it. This is what is called a psychological training.

Hence, you start craving the things you used to crave before. However, this is very easy to deal with, you just have to ignore it. We know it sounds stupid, but it is true, you are just bored. You will not die if you do not eat the foods that used to make you fat, lazy and foggy. You need to have the time to develop healthier habits.

On the other hand, there are real cravings as well and those are called psychological cravings. With these, your body tells you what it is missing. You need to pay attention to them.

We hope now that you have a clear understanding of the difference between the both. Just be really honest with yourself and try to realize if you are really craving something or it is just because of boredom or habit. You need to be honest with yourself because you are the only one who can decide this. Thus, if you are not fully ready, you will fail.

Psychological Cravings

Craving Salty Foods like Chips and Pizza

This means that you might need tryptophan or chloride. Just consume cheese, unsalted cottage cheese, fish or spinach and add a bit of salt.

Craving Chocolate

This might mean that you need magnesium. It is of great importance that you keep a good amount of salt (sodium, potassium and magnesium) in your diet, at least 2 teaspoons a day. However, if you crave chocolate, you should eat it. But, not any kind. You need to eat 75% or higher dark chocolate. Do not eat milk chocolate.

Sugary Snacks and Starches like Donuts and Bread

This means that you might be dehydrated and you need to drink a lot of water.

Carbonated Beverages

If you are craving these, you need to up your mineral intake. Just have some spinach, kale or collard greens.

Good Fat

What we have presented up until now are some specific cravings, however, there is something you can eat when you are craving anything and it will help you. What we are talking about is good fat.

If you consume good fats like coconut oil, butter, animal fats, avocados, macadamia nuts and olive oil you will be able to satiate yourself. Also, you can associate the cravings with food fat intake.
